New Voters Project

The New Voters Project aims to engage and inspire our nation’s young people by educating them about the voting process, training young activists of all ideological persuasions and, most importantly, aggressively registering young new voters from all walks of life. Read more.

Clean Elections

When big money dominates politics, people lose out. Elected officials become more responsive to the demands of wealthy special interests and less concerned with the problems of North Carolina’s citizens.  Read more.

Same-Day Voter Registration

Unfortunately, North Carolina ranks in the bottom third of the country in voter turnout. Our low turnout rate is due partially to the fact that one million voting age citizens are not even registered.  Read more.

Overview

Our democracy is at a crossroads. The overwhelming influence of powerful interests threatens the viability and integrity of our electoral process. Well-heeled corporate donors too often decide who runs for office, who wins, and how those elected officials vote.

This system of elections has resulted in decreased voter participation and bad public policy. Our energy policy is dictated by utility companies; our tax system benefits large, multi-state corporations at the expense of small, locally-owned businesses; our health care system values the profits of the drug industry over the health of our state. It’s time for a change.

That’s why NCPIRG supports a new system for financing campaigns, one that allows qualified candidates who agree to spending limits and refuse private contributions to receive a set amount of public funds. And to boost voter participation, NCPIRG also supports policies that allow voters to register and vote on the same day.
