“While families are struggling to pay energy bills, Duke Energy is requesting hefty, new charges for energy efficiency.” says Shana Becker, Staff Attorney for the North Carolina Public Interest Research Group (NCPIRG), a consumer watchdog group. Under the program, Duke would charge $18.23 for promoting an energy efficient light bulb that retails for $1.65, as stated by Public Staff, the consumer advocate for the Utilities Commission, in recent news reports. |

RALEIGH—An array of more than 15 leading environmental, consumer, and social justice groups, including AARP North Carolina, NC Justice Center, and Southern Environmental Law Center, are calling on House lawmakers to make key changes to S. 3, the energy bill that includes a blank check for more coal and nuclear power plants along with promotions for renewable energy sources. |

Raleigh, NC. Today, the Senate Commerce Committee will hear House Bill 1086, a natural gas rate bill known as the “CUT,” sponsored by Representatives Saunders and Brubaker. The “CUT” (short for customer usage tracking and rate adjustment mechanism), would open the door for natural gas providers to recover a fixed profit. The profit would be guaranteed and decoupled from sales. |

Raleigh, NC. Legislators and consumer advocates are applauding the Utilities Commission’s decision to suspend PSNC’s rate schedule that charges residents more, who use less in the summer. Effective June 1st, all residents will be charged the lower, “value” rate. The decision marks the end of a controversy, spanning seven months. |
