Raleigh, NC – Today, members of the Automobile Insurance Modernization Joint Select Committee will revisit proposals by the insurance industry to drastically alter auto insurance regulation. The Committee was created after two bills, S900 and S901, failed to pass in the 2007 legislative session as a result of consumer backlash. | |

RALEIGH – Today, Gov. Mike Easley signed into law the “Identity Theft Protection Act of 2005” (SB 1048), one of the strongest such bills in the nation. The bill received widespread support from consumer groups, the Attorney General’s office, and from legislators on both sides of the aisle. | |

Earlier this week, the Veteran’s Administration revealed that the social security numbers of over 26 million veterans was stolen, leaving these veterans vulnerable to identity theft. In response to this monumental breach, NCPIRG and Attorney General Roy Cooper have called on the General Assembly to allow veterans to freeze their credit at no cost. | |

While Congress considers a bill that would weaken North Carolina’s strong identity theft protection law, 26.5 million veterans were left vulnerable to identity theft after their social security numbers were stolen earlier this month. | |
