Monitoring Tax Breaks for Big Business

What's New

We support legislation that prevents companies from keeping the subsidies and tax-giveaways they have been given a secret. Tax-payers have a right to know where their money is going, and localities should be able to hold companies accountable for the promises they make.

How You Can Help

Tell your Representative and Senator to support House Bill H1663 which would prohibit companies from making the subsidies a secret, and House Bill 1791 that helps localities hold companies accountable for their promises.

Overview

Tax giveaways—subsidies and tax exemptions for big corporations —should be subject to greater public accountability. Currently, special tax breaks given to big companies require no annual approval, no review and no proof that the companies are living up to their end of the bargain. Companies even try to keep secret how much tax-payer money they are getting. NCPIRG believes that tax-payers should know where their money is going, and be able to hold companies accountable if they fail to deliver on their promises.

NCPIRG's federal Democracy Advocate Gary Kalman testifies in the capital in May 2007.
