Closing Corporate Tax Loopholes

North Carolina needs a fair playing field for local businesses to promote economic growth. Tax avoidance practices by large, multi-state corporations put small, local businesses at a competitive disadvantage. Read more.

Monitoring Tax Breaks for Big Business

NCPIRG believes that tax-payers should know where their money is going, and be able to hold companies accountable if they fail to deliver on their promises. Read more.

Overview

North Carolina's taxes and budget should be accountable, transparent, and encourage good business practices. Unfortunately, multi-state businesses use loopholes in our tax code to avoid paying taxes in North Carolina, and thereby gain an unfair competitive advantage over local businesses. North Carolina also pays millions in tax give-aways to big companies that invent new ways to avoid accountability. Furthermore, moneyed interests get legislators to attach special spending items to unrelated legislation. To promote fair business practices and spending accountability, NCPIRG supports two common-sense reforms: closing tax loopholes used by multi-state corporations and pursuing accountability for tax giveaways to big business.

NCPIRG's Federal Consumer Program Director Ed Mierzwinski testifies before congress.
