Consumer group praises drought proposal

By Jordan Schrader

A consumer advocacy group today praised Gov. Mike Easley's plan for conserving water as the state's worst drought continues.

Easley this week proposed banning rate structures that reward large water users with lower rates.

N.C. Public Interest Research Group said the plan, which requires approval from the General Assembly, is a "pragmatic approach."

Easley wants authority for the state to set minimum conservation measures in areas affected by drought, and for local water systems to make well users conform to their conservation rules.

He also wants to require new construction to use more efficient fixtures, which PIRG said could include low flow toilets, and efficient water spouts and shower heads.

“Efficiency codes are the simplest, smartest way to increase water savings.” said Shana Becker, a lobbyist for the group. “Efficient appliances save water – and money – without effort.”
