Report: North Carolina second largest releaser of respiratory toxicants in U.S.

By Nanci Bompey

North Carolina ranked second in the country in 2004 for total air releases of toxic pollution suspected to cause respiratory illness, according to a report released today by the North Carolina Public Interest Research Group.

The largest source of this pollution came from the Duke Energy Belews Creek Steam Station in Stokes County, which released more than 13 million pounds of respitory toxicants into the air, NCPIRG said.

The report used information from the federal Toxic Release Inventory to analyze toxic pollution linked to serious health problems such as cancer, birth defects or neurological damage.
