Tell Duke to Support Independent, Real Energy Efficiency Programs, Sack Save-a-Watt

As families struggle with high energy prices, Duke Energy is proposing hefty premiums for small energy efficiency gains in its “Save-a-Watt” program. For example, an energy efficient light bulb that costs $1.65 at the store would cost $18.63 ultimately, under Duke’s proposal. The energy savings Duke projects, however, are 85% LESS than typical energy efficiency programs.

Ask Duke to sack Save-a-Watt and to support an independent, real energy efficiency programs.

Letter	Dear Mr. Rogers, I appreciate your effort to publicize energy efficiency. According to research by Duke, North Carolina can meet up to 19% of its energy demand by energy efficiency more cheaply than by coal and nuclear power plants. Energy efficiency is the cleanest, and should be the cheapest way to meet energy demand. But that is not how Duke’s “Save-a-Watt” proposal works. “Save-a-Watt” saves a lot less energy than typical programs - 85% less. I would have to pay a whole lot more for it. An energy efficient light bulb that I could buy for $1.65 would cost me $18.23. While I value efficiency, I also value saving money. It doesn’t seem like Duke is good at saving either in “Save-a-Watt.” Please withdraw “Save-a-Watt” from consideration in North Carolina, and support independent, real energy efficiency programs. Other states use independent energy efficiency non-profits to maximize energy efficiency, and this makes sense to me. Thank you,
