Tell Commissioners to Rule for Real Energy Efficiency, Against Save-a-Watt

Tell the Utilities Commission, which begins hearing Duke Energy’s Save-a-watt petition on July 28, that you support real energy efficiency, but not Save-a-Watt. The Utilities Commission decision will set a precedent for energy efficiency programs in North Carolina: how much we pay, how much we get, and who runs them. Ask them to protect you from bogus energy efficiency charges.

Letter	Dear Commissioner, Thank you for giving significant weight to my interests in saving money and reducing pollution as you decide important utility matters. In the "Save-A-Watt" proceeding, I need your protection more than ever. As you know, Duke Energy has requested to charge customers 90% of "avoided cost" as compensation for customers' efficiency. Newspaper articles reveal that I would have to pay Duke Energy $18.23 for an energy efficient light bulb that I could buy for $1.65. They also state that Duke’s program saves 85% less energy than typical programs. While I value efficiency, Duke’s program is unfair. "Save-a-Watt" costs too much and does too little. Please rule against Duke's "Save-a-Watt," and for real energy efficiency. Other states use independent energy efficiency non-profits to maximize energy efficiency, and this makes sense to me. We wouldn't put Krispy Kreme in charge of diet plans, and we shouldn’t put Duke in charge of energy efficiency. Sincerely,
